Christie Ashbeck is an independently licensed professional counselor (LPC) providing counseling services to clients in Arizona, Colorado and Maine. Prior to moving to Arizona and becoming a mental health counselor, Christie lived in Wyoming where she raised and trained her own horses to compete in rodeo events. In 2001, she started an equine therapy business called “Whole Horse Connection,” where she taught equine massage therapy, soft chiropractic manipulation and other alternative treatments to horse owners who wanted to heal not only their horse’s physical ailments, but also the disruptions in their nervous systems caused by trauma. An unexpected outcome of this work was that Christie’s clients themselves would notice a decrease in their own trauma symptoms, and a better regulated emotional state, which prompted Christie to earn her master’s degree in professional counseling and carry this insight into her mental health career.
Interestingly, horses are similar in humans in that they are “herd” animals, and their ability to stay and feel safe in their environment is directly related to the health of the herd they run with (aka family). Because of Christie’s experience in treating traumatized horses, she became keenly interested in treating trauma in humans, as both species share these disruptions to their well-being, yet with entirely different presentations. Horses tend to release their trauma more readily, while humans, with the help of their larger, more “developed” brains, tend to hold onto their trauma much longer, as they believe it is a directly related to who they are and what they “deserve.” This is known as “complex trauma,” which horses do not have.
Christie holds certifications in a variety of mental health treatment modalities, most notable Eye-Movement Desensitization (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Post-Induction Therapy (PIT, Meadows Model) and most recently, Relational Life Therapy (RLT). She has worked in a range of patient settings, including inpatient, residential and outpatient. She spent the majority of her internship and associate level years working at Rosewood Center for Eating Disorders and The Meadows in Wickenburg, a world-renowned treatment center for trauma and addiction founded by Pia Mellody, whom Terry cites frequently in his own recovery process and life work.

CARLEY COPE
MA, LAC

DEGREES & CERTIFICATIONS
Bachelor of Arts in Clinical Psychology, 2019 Ottawa University
Master of Arts in Counseling, 2023 Ottawa University
Licensed Associate Counselor
Certified in EAGALA
Welcome! It’s so nice to see you here. I’m Carley Cope, an Arizona native with a deep passion for both mental health and holistic healing. Growing up in the Valley of the Sun, you could find me either running around with horses or kicking around a soccer ball. My love for soccer paid off, affording me the opportunity to play collegiately in Denver, CO, and later brought me back to AZ, where I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Ottawa University.
After my college soccer career ended, I found myself drawn back to my childhood passion and began volunteering at a ranch horse rescue, where I was eventually promoted to horse trainer. A significant turning point came when I rescued my first personal horse, a physically and emotionally traumatized racehorse, and embarked on the process of rehabilitating her. It was through this experience that I discovered the true power of a horse’s impact on the human psyche and soul. Over time, I realized that the horse was mirroring my own emotions. When I became vulnerable and let go of anger and frustration, not only did my relationship with the horse transform, but my life did too. This breakthrough shaped my understanding of the profound impact horses can have on emotional healing and ultimately inspired me to become an Equine Therapist.
A few short years later, I found myself completing my student residency at an equine therapy practice in Queen Creek, AZ, and shortly after graduating from Ottawa University with my Master’s in Counseling, specializing in Trauma, Abuse, and Deprivation.
My professional experience spans a variety of settings, including community behavioral health, residential treatment centers, group homes, outpatient counseling, and equine-assisted therapy. I also had the unique experience of running the Arizona State prison’s Max Psychosis unit for a period of time. This wide range of experiences has provided me with a well-rounded understanding of diverse challenges and the ability to tailor therapy to meet each individual’s needs without judgment.
My counseling specialties include sport and performance enhancement, treatment-resistant trauma, sexual abuse, chronic illness, relationship issues, identity discovery and self-exploration, environmental stress, prison reentry, and first responders. I often joke that I’m not the “ABCEDG…” type of therapist, as I believe in using an eclectic and experiential approach. I draw from various theories, including Gestalt and Jungian, and combine them with therapeutic methods like art therapy and equine-assisted therapy to facilitate deep self-exploration in ways that are less daunting and more relatable to everyday life.
In the coming months, I hope to offer psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy to optimize healing from treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and trauma.
When you work with me, you can expect a warm, welcoming, comfortable, and all-accepting environment. My number one goal as your therapist is to make therapy fun! Taking the leap into counseling to make personal improvements is a courageous, beautiful step in life—and it should be celebrated, not feared. We can meet virtually via telehealth or in-person at the peaceful equine therapy ranch. No matter the setting, you will always be met where you are—whether in laughter or tears.
